Top 10 Climbing Plants – Passion Flower

Posted May 15, 2011 by in Blog | No comments yet

The passion flower is a popular choice for amateur & professional gardeners alike and no wonder why,  it features a lovely creamy-white flowering section, with centre pieces of purple-blue decoration. It is a climber of evergreen variety and boasts flowers which are exotic in appearance that occasionally lead to fruits bright in colour. The flowers ‘hardiness’ is somewhat average and it loves both sunny and partly shaded areas.

Height: To 1 metre

Flowers: Mid to late Summer

Family: Passiflora

The passion flower is well sited in a sunnier area with shelter available and does best when grown in milder counties of the United Kingdom. Gardeners can successfully grow passion flowers within colder areas of the UK, but within the framework of a conservatory or warmer greenhouse area is advisable.

The passion flower enjoys reasonably fertile and moistly available soil which is also well drained; it grows within soil of any category whether this is acidly based or of more alkaline nature. Protection from colder, drying out winds is needed and west pointing or south west facing walls are perfect.

The sturdiness of the passion flower does depend on the species and cultivated variety. ‘P. caerulea’ for instance is somewhat resistant to frosty weather and is particularly able to grow outside within warmer climates, but could benefit from additional protection during the winter.

‘Passiflora incarnata’ is robust for instance and would still require careful growing in sheltered garden areas. The passion flower is the worthy recipient of the Award of Garden Merit (AGM), which has been presented to the plant from The Royal Horticultural Society.

When planting passion flower seeds, ensure these are sown between the months of March to May, leading to blooming of the plant during the middle to later summer season. Following a warmer summer period, the passion flower is often shown sporting orangey-yellow fruits which are in a stage of formation and provide lovely decorative adornments.
